Teacher Background:

Connie Allison was born and raised in Germany and has been at MHS since 1972. She strongly believes that a happy student learns best. If a student needs assistance, please contact her. Requests for grade checks are also always welcome.

Class Description:

The course is driven by a "packet" the student receives at the beginning of the semester. Major tests and the final exam are in this packet. The tests also indicate daily quizzes, since each test item is also a one-on-one speaking test. The chapter culminates with the written test that has been pre-tested in parts. Each missing word on the chapter test costs -3 points from 100%.

Grading Scale:

Grades 90-100% = A. The final 9-weeks grade is an average of 10 "major" grades. These are chapter test grades, a materials grade (-20 per day for missing books, materials;= -2 points of the 9-weeks grade), a performance grade (speaking a longer piece of German), and several averaged daily grades (poor work is -5 and each missing or zero grade is -20 off one of the averaged daily grades, or two points off the final 9-weeks grade). The formula for semester averages is determined by the school district -- 2/5 first 9-weeks, 2/5 second 9-weeks, 1/5 final exam. Depending on which method gives the student the higher grade, grades are either averaged by percentage points or on the (4, 3, 2, 1, 0) traditional GPA points. Any work toward the 9-week grade must be completed a full week before the grading period ends.

Absentee Policy:

The student absent for a school activities absence has no daily make up. All other absences will cost the student -20 points off an averaged daily grade (=-2 off 9-weeks grade). An absence can be made up by copying the answers to a chapter test onto notebook paper. This must be done within two days after the absence unless special arrangements are made.

Extra Credit:

+2 extra credit is added to the final 9-weeks grade for each of these catagories: eating at a German restaurant, bringing German items to show class, bringing German food for the class. The student is welcome to petition German-related activities for extra credit, such as reports in other classes or books read. Class field trips usually count as extra-credit.
